But today it only remains 4 arches out of the original 22. The bridge of Avignon takes its name from a young shepherd, B\u00e9nezet, who came down from the Ard\u00e8che mountains in 1177. He said he was sent by God to build a bridge in Avignon. At first, he was taken for a madman, and to prove it, the Avignon prelate gave him an impossible challenge : to load an enormous stone on his shoulders and throw it into the Rhone. But he succeeded ! It is a mimed round evoking all kinds of characters dancing around the Pont Saint-B\u00e9n\u00e9zet, in Avignon. The song dates back to the fifteenth century. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"tw-data-text tw-text-large XcVN5d tw-ta\" dir=\"ltr\" data-placeholder=\"Traduction\"><span lang=\"en\">We do not know the author or the origin of the song, but it became popular in 1853 when the composer Adolphe Adam played it in his comic opera, &#8220;Le Sourd ou l&#8217;Auberge pleine&#8221;. The dances were originally done on the banks, the Bridge being too narrow for a real farandole.
